What Is Sainfoin?
Sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia) is a perennial legume that has been cultivated for centuries as a highly nutritious forage for horses and livestock. What makes sainfoin truly unique is its naturally occurring condensed tannins. Unlike most other forage legumes, including alfalfa, sainfoin contains moderate levels of these beneficial plant compounds, giving it nutritional and digestive properties not found in traditional forages.
The Science Behind Sainfoin
What truly sets sainfoin apart from alfalfa is its naturally occurring condensed tannins. While alfalfa contains virtually no condensed tannins, the moderate levels found in sainfoin provide several unique nutritional and digestive advantages.

Feeding Directions:
Feed at a rate of 4 to 6 lbs per day. Can be substituted for some of the hay ration on a pound per pound basis.
Since sainfoin and alfalfa have similar mineral profiles, use alfalfa cautiously when adding it to the diet. Grass hay is the preferred choice when including additional forage.
